Super Trend Indicator

#volatility #trendfollowing #stoploss

Creator: Olivier Seban

  • Period: 10
  • Multiplier: 3

The Super Trend indicator is one of the most popular trend following indicators.

Similar to a Moving Average, the Super Trend indicates the strength of a trend. The key feature of the Super Trend indicator is that it takes volatility into account while displaying the trend. As a result, it is a smoother and more effective trend following indicator.

The Super Trend line rises when the trend is strong and falls when the trend is weak. When volatility is high, it flattens out.

A price above the Super Trend line indicates a strong bullish trend, whereas a price below the Super Trend line indicates a strong bearish trend.

Plots a trailing stop-loss line at ATR × Multiplier distance from price. The line ratchets in the trend direction only – rising below price in uptrends, falling above price in downtrends and flips when price closes across it.

Default period: 10, 2 (ATR period, multiplier)

Line below price indicates bullish trend. Line above price indicates bearish trend.

Useful readings:

Price closes below bullish line: Trend flipped bearish, exit longs

Price closes above bearish line: Trend flipped bullish, exit shorts

Flat line for many bars: Price consolidating, trend undecided, breakout watch

Frequent flips in short span: Choppy market, trend signals unreliable, reduce size

Higher multiplier (3x): Wider stop, fewer whipsaws, suits positional trades

Lower multiplier (1.5–2x): Tighter stop, faster exits, suits swing trades

Objective rules:

Bullish: Price closes above Super trend line.

Bearish: Price closes below Super trend line.

Long setup filter: Close > SuperTrend line AND line rising for 3+ bars

Short setup filter: Close < SuperTrend line AND line falling for 3+ bars

Whipsaw filter: Skip signal if previous flip occurred within last 5 bars

What makes it unique:

It compresses trend direction, trailing stop and entry trigger into a single line on the chart. The ratchet logic means it never gives back a locked level while the trend lives.

The indicator table value in TradePoint & RZone also provides you with a list of all values of this indicator for any group of stocks. This will allow you to compare the readings of this indicator across different stocks.

This indicator is also available in the System Builder on RZone & TradePoint for all charting methods. Using the system builder, you can develop various strategies based on the different conditions already present in this indicator. Additionally, it can be used with other indicators or price patterns to develop effective trading strategies. For any group of stocks and market segments, you can scan and backtest stocks based on those strategies.

The indicator is applicable to all types of charting. It is calculated based on the number of columns on P&F charts, bricks on Renko charts, lines on Line-break charts, candles on Heikin-Ashi charts, and lines on Kagi charts. While the formula and reading of the indicators remain the same, they become more dynamic on these charts.
